YOUNG WHEELING CHOOSES ART.

The Young Wheeling Chooses Art (Y.W.C.A.) Program is a summer camp initiative, located in Wheeling, West Virginia, that focuses on drug and violence prevention.  The Y.W.C.A. camp was started to give students, from ages 10-16, an opportunity to have a summer program that promotes and provides different art initiatives and hands-on exposure to the arts.  One of the goals of the camp is to help the children develop self-sufficiency and increase self-esteem while providing a safe environment with a good learning experience.  The camp allows children to learn all about the arts and to utilize their individual artistic talents.  The camp offers two week sessions throughout the entire summer and at the end of each session the students are allowed to perform for their parents and guests.  The camp received a grant from the Community Grant Program, which will allow them to operate fully for the summer of 2002.   In the past the camp was a full day program, but because of a lack of funding the camp was cut back to a half a day.  The grant will also help the camp purchase supplies for the students.
