Dr. John
Spears was the son of a coal miner and hardscrabble pioneer
mother. He rose up as a free mountaineer to assert his
dignity and worth in business, education, and government. He
looked back only to extend a helping hand to others, and
fought the good fight, not only for himself, but for
countless others blessed by his friendship and inspired by
his example.
The Robert H. Mollohan Family Charitable Foundation, Inc.
and the John R. Spears Memorial Committee are pleased to
offer the John R. Spears Education Scholarship to support
the perpetuation of the values that West Virginia gave to
John and that he returned unsullied, values that he lived by
and died by, to keep and pass on to future generations. This
renewable scholarship will be given annually to a student
who meets the qualifications listed below. In order to
receive the scholarship each year, recipients must remain at
Glenville State College, continue to pursue a degree in
education, and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
