on of a coal miner and hardscrabble pioneer mother, John rose up
as a free mountaineer to assert his dignity and worth in
business, education, and government. He looked back only to
extend a helping hand to others, and fought the good fight, not
only for himself, but for countless others blessed by his
friendship and inspired by his example.
The Robert H. Mollohan Family Charitable Foundation, Inc. and
the John R. Spears Memorial Committee support the perpetuation
of the values that West Virginia gave to John and that he
returned unsullied, values that he lived by and died by, to keep
