The
Martha Stuart Oden Scholarship was created in 2002 to honor
the life of Martha Stuart Oden.
Martha was born in Richmond, Virginia on August 31,
1940, to Martha and Philip Oden. She was the oldest of their
four daughters. The
family moved to Ronceverte, West Virginia in 1949 where she
attended Ronceverte Elementary School and Greenbrier High
School. She was
active in church and school activities.
She especially enjoyed music and played the piano and
saxophone in the Greenbrier High School Band.
Martha won the West Virginia Golden Horseshoe Award in
1954. She was in
the ninth grade when she died on April 6, 1955. She is remembered by her family and friends as joyful, kind,
intelligent, talented and a good friend.
At the graduation of her classmates in 1958, a chair
was left empty in Martha’s memory.
With
this in mind, the scholarship was created to help a student of
Greenbrier East High School reach his/her dream of pursuing
education beyond secondary school.
The
recipient will receive a $1,000 award made payable directly to
the student’s college at the start of the first year.
It is the intent of the Scholarship Committee to assist
the recipient in securing a summer internship experience in
West Virginia focusing on the student’s area of career
interest. The
Scholarship Committee will forward the recipient’s
credentials to selected companies; however, the final decision
for internship employment will rest with the company and the
student.
