West Taylor Elementary School recently received a $5,000
community outreach grant from the Mollohan Foundation. West
Taylor Elementary opened in January 2006 by merging two
smaller schools: Hepzibah and Pruntytown Elementary Schools.
Upon the opening of West Taylor Elementary, it was
discovered that nearly 50% of the new library’s books were
outdated and in poor condition. Additionally, none of the
classrooms or the library currently has any magazines. Thus,
the “Bucks for Books” committee was born and a magazine
subscription drive implemented.
“Bucks for Books” is striving to provide the 250 children of
West Taylor Elementary with current books and resources to
update the library and increase the reading opportunities
presented. By providing books and additional reading
materials, the school hopes to offer a library that can
fulfill requirements to meet guidelines indicating that a
school library should have at least 25 books per student.
The “Bucks for Books” will utilize the community outreach
grant funds to purchase books for the school’s new library.
Additional funds and partnerships will hopefully enable the
school to house a library of books and periodical resources
of over 6,000 titles. This will help create an area ripe for
the imagination and education of children through reading
and exploring ideas.
