On Tuesday, September 6, the Robert H. Mollohan Family Charitable Foundation held its Sixth Annual Golf Tournament at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport. This year, 180 golfers "teed off" to raise funds for the organization's programming, which includes scholarship, community outreach, and public policy programs. The warm, sunny day contributed to the success of the event which brought together Congressmen, businessmen, and community leaders from West Virginia, Ohio, Virginia, Kentucky and Washington, DC. A fun time was had by all.
The format of the golf tournament was a four man scramble with prizes awarded for first, second, and third place gross and net. Skill prizes were also awarded for the longest putt, the longest drive, and the closest to the pin. For the second year in a row, a team from Washington, DC clenched the first place gross prize. Team members included: Marty Russo, Tom Dennis, Ron Reeves, and local Morgantown resident Dennis Poluga. As for the winners of the first place net prize, a team sponsored by Azimuth Incorporated won. Team members included Jeff Audia, Clyde Thomas, Monica Hussell, and Tim Morgan. First place winners each received a trophy and a gift certificate for $200 to the Pete Dye Golf Pro Shop.
During the evening reception, which was attended by a crowd of approximately 240, Congressman Alan B. Mollohan and his family announced the formation of the General Randall L. West and Robin Lane West Emergency Fund for Severely Wounded West Virginia Veterans. This fund was created to provide West Virginia servicemen and women, who have been severely injured while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, with a small cash gift to help cover household and emergency expenses until their benefits from federal programs begin. General Randall West, its namesake, spoke to the attendees about the importance of this fund and what it means to these individuals and their families.
The Seventh Annual Golf Tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, September 5, 2007.
