The Preston County Literacy Volunteers’ mission is to reduce the number of adults who can not read well enough to possess basic literacy skills in Preston County. Literacy Volunteers’ tutors assist these adult learners to help them improve basic reading and writing skills. This is especially important in Preston County because 36% of the county’s adult population did not complete high school.
Founded in 1987, the Preston County Literacy Volunteers was formed by community members and library personnel. In addition to reading and writing skills, the program also offers computer training and a quilting program. The volunteers are also in the process of establishing a mobile library called the “Ruby Read.” Together, these programs will help make a difference in the quality of life available to numerous Preston County residents.
The $1500 grant from the Foundation will be used to fund the long arm quilter needed for the quilting class. While at the quilting class, participants learn about the art of quilting and all the reading and writing involved with making a quilt, as well as the math required to create a quilt. The class also teaches independent thinking skills, addresses hygiene issues and teaches teamwork. Currently, the Preston County Literacy Volunteers have quilts and quilted bags on sale through their website. In June, the quilted items will be on display in the Preston County Chamber of Commerce.
