The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) Receives Grant
The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) was established in June 1948 to control and abate pollution in the Ohio River Basin. ORANSCO is an interstate commission representing eight states and the federal government. Member states include: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The ORSANCO Educational Foundation was founded in 2004 and purchased the historic sternwheeler, the P.A. Denny, which housed the ORSANCO River Education Center. The River Education Center provides a unique river-based educational experience for students and teachers throughout the Ohio River Basin.

On May 19, the ORSANCO River Education Center and floating classroom will set sail for Charleston, WV and will arrive on May 21. From May 22-26, 4th graders in the Greater Charleston area will be taking field trips aboard the River Education Center. This hands-on river-based experience in science, math, and history will enable the students to become “Pollution Detectives on the Kanawha!” While on board, students will study the health of the Kanawha River by testing the river, looking at aquatic life, and learning about history and navigation.

The Mollohan Family Foundation awarded the ORSANCO Education Foundation with a $5,000 grant to bring the ORSANCO River Education Center and floating classroom to Charleston. Through this experience, students will gain valuable insight into their surroundings and leave with an understanding about the aquatic environment around them and how pollution affects aquatic life in the Kanawha River.
