The Mountaineer Boys and Girls Club Receives Grant
The Mountaineer Boys and Girls Club recently received a $2,500 community outreach grant from the Mollohan Family Foundation.

The Mountaineer Boys and Girls Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for youth in the Morgantown community. The primary mission of the Boys and Girls Club is to promote health, social education, education enhancement opportunities, and character development for boys and girls grades 1-12, by building self-esteem, values, and skills.

During the 2004-2005 academic year, the Monongalia Academic Mentoring Program, a program of the Mountaineer Boys and Girls Club, provides academic support services to South Middle School students. The Program offered tutoring services, homework help and academic support services three days a week after school. The Monongalia Academic Mentoring Program was also offered at the Boys and Girls Club four days a week after school.

The Monongalia Academic Mentoring Program is under expansion as the Mountaineer Boys and Girls Club seeks to provide more students in the Morgantown community with educational opportunities. Thus, the $2,500 community outreach grant will be used to further fund the Monongalia Academic Mentoring Program, which will combine junior and senior peer educators to provide academic support as well as modeling for the younger students. Additionally, participants will engage in career exploration and mentoring, enrichment activities, post-secondary school site visits, money management skills, and other extended learning activities to deepen Club’s impact in education, technology, race relations, and career development.

In addition to the Mollohan Foundation’s award, Bank One pledged $5,000 toward the Monongalia Academic Mentoring Program in order to further expand the program’s reach in the community and diversify the activities currently offered to students involved in the program.
