The International Mother’s Day Shrine, Inc. Receives Grant
The International Mother’s Day Shrine, Inc. received a $504 community outreach grant from the Mollohan Foundation in January 2006. Located in Grafton, the International Mother’s Day Shrine strives to preserve, promote and develop through education the Spirit of Motherhood. To that end, they have established the Community Education Institute.

The Community Education Institute’s mission is to sponsor and support programs that provide social, cultural, and health related activities free of charge to a diverse and under served community audience. The goals of the Community Education Institute Committee are to gain increased financial backing; reach out to a broader audience; sponsor distinguished presenters; promote specific health issues of women and children through education; and organize a lecture series concerning women and children’s issues to be held during the Mother’s Day Centennial Celebration in 2008.

Funding for the Institute’s first 2006 program will be covered by the Mollohan Foundation Community Outreach Grant. The International Mother’s Day Shrine, Inc. will host a presentation by Hunter Lesser. A native of Elkins, Lesser is author of Rebels at the Gate, a study “of the Civil War drama that created West Virginia.” This lecture and book signing will be part of the Community Education Institute’s free programs. The event will serve as the opening for the month-long West Virginia Humanities Council Civil War Exhibit. It is also a starting event to the City of Grafton’s 2006 Sesquicentennial Celebration.
