612 Mac Community Center Receives Grant

This past summer, the Mollohan Foundation awarded the 612 MAC Community Center a $5,000 community outreach grant. The 612 MAC Community Center opened its doors in 1987 and has been working to make a difference in the lives' of youth ever since. They strive to promote general social, economic and educational welfare throughout the entire community through their programs. They create a solid foundation for their youth to grow upon which helps develop their members' minds positively.

A majority of the thirty children who regularly attend the facility come from low-income, low-resource African-American families in Fairmont. 612 MAC tries to be a constant in their lives by providing them with a safe place where they can go after school and in the summer. It also provides an environment that allows each member to be supported and valued as an individual. The programs that are offered include after-school care, a summer youth day camp, HIV awareness discussions, and a sports program. Each of these programs provides a safe environment for the children to learn and grow whether on the field or in a classroom-like setting.

The 612 Mac Community Center used a portion of the grant to purchase playground equipment for their new playground area. The remainder of the money was used to fund a music program recently started by the Community Center in response to a growing interest in music by several members who expressed a desire to learn to play various musical instruments. Items that were purchased included music stands, sheet music, and instruments.
