The Minority Aviation Education
Association, Inc. (MAEA) received a grant from the Mollohan
Family Foundation to help fund tuition for students to
attend science camps in Ohio County.
MAEA was founded
to address the lack of minorities and females in the fields
of science and technology by creating and nurturing an
interest in science among these traditionally
under-represented groups. Over the past 12 years, MAEA has
become the largest science and math outreach company owned
and operated by minorities in the nation. The organization
has developed over 60 Interactive Science Programs designed
to get young people excited about math and science. The
group is based in Wheeling, WV and is headed by Darryl Lee Baynes.
Currently, MAEA provides science programs for close
to 100,000 students, teachers, and parents annually. For the
third year, MAEA will offer science camps to students in
Ohio County for 200 students. During these camps, students
will experiment with robotics and many more hands-on science
tools.
The Mollohan Family Foundation awarded The
Minority Aviation Education Association, Inc. $5,000 to fund
scholarships for low-income students to attend the science
camps during the upcoming summer. The grant money will
provide opportunities to students who might not ordinarily
be able to participate because of financial limitations.
