Literacy
Volunteers of Marion County, a nonprofit United Way
corporation, achieves increased literacy in Marion County by
teaching adults and children, without discrimination,
including those for whom English is a second language.
Literacy Volunteers of Marion County (LVMC) provides free
services and programs primarily through volunteers.
LVMC
seeks to reduce the problem of illiteracy through working
with adults and children through one-on-one tutoring in
reading, math, computer literacy, and English as a second
language. Additionally, LVMC seeks to inspire young students
to excel in critical thinking, reading, and writing skills.
To that goal, Literacy Volunteers of Marion County are
launching a new campaign: I.N.S.P.I.R.E. I.N.S.P.I.R.E.
stands for Incentives to Inspire Students and Parents to
Participate in Reading and Writing Excellence.
Part of
the I.N.S.P.I.R.E. Program is an intergenerational project
to develop critical thinking, presentation, and writing
skills of Mannington Middle School students in an
after-school program to be held at the Mannington Public
Library. Senior Citizens from the Mannington Senior Citizen
Center will participate in the program on a regular basis.
The program will consist of seven modules, each one month
long and meeting once per week. This program will seek to
inspire students to develop an understanding of and
appreciation for various forms of writing, presentation,
persuasion, and critical thinking skills.
To assist in
promoting literacy and learning in Marion County, the
Mollohan Foundation awarded the Literacy Volunteers of
Marion County a $5000 grant to help support the I.N.S.P.I.R.E. program. Specifically, the Foundation is
interested in helping to fund the purchase of pens and
notebooks for thirty students, incentives for ten senior
citizens, the purchase of weekly books, field trip support,
and minimal fees associated with a Program Manager position.
