The Kanawha County 4-H Program Receives Grant
The Kanawha County 4-H Program received a $500 mini-grant from the Mollohan Foundation to assist in funding programming at their annual camps.

Kanawha County has many active 4-H Clubs in Belle, Clendenin, Cross Lanes, Elkview/Pinch, and Charleston. Each club meets monthly and participates in a number of activities throughout the year, including community service, fundraisers to assist with camp fees, games, parties, and participating in county-wide events such as project exhibitions, Charleston’s Grand Feature Parade, 4-H Day at the West Virginia Power, or Club Officer’s Training School. Additionally, Kanawha County has two weeks of summer camp at Camp Virgil Tate. Older camp is designed for teens ages 13-21 while younger camp is geared toward younger children ages 9-12. The week-long camps are open to all children in Kanawha County and it is not necessary to complete a 4-H project to attend.

This year’s camp theme is “Oh the Places You Can Go” and daily themes for the camp are designed to engage the campers in activities that promote the 4H’s: Head for thinking, Heart for loyalty, Hands to serve, and Health for living. Some of the activities campers participate in are classes ranging from traditional arts and crafts to web design, car maintenance, and electronic kit building. Other events include sports, a talent show, dance party, and competition for the “Spirit Stick.” A highlight of each camp is a camp party complete with food, decorations, and DJ. Each camp also concludes with an awards night.

The $500 mini-grant will help purchase materials for camp classes and awards night, and will assist in funding food and supplies for the camp party. The Kanawha County 4-H Program works “To Make the Best Better.”
