The
Harrison County Board of Education received a $5000 grant to
support the Interactive Summer Science Camp for Middle
School Students. Harrison County schools serve 11,500
children who attend 14 elementary schools, 6 middle schools,
5 high schools, a multi-county vocational center, and an
alternative high school. The mission of Harrison County
Schools is to achieve excellence in education, through
partnerships with home and community, so that each student
becomes a life-long learner, a responsible citizen, and a
productive member of society.
The Interactive Summer
Science Camp for Middle School Students will take place June
26-30 with Darryl Baynes, “The Science Man.” Baynes is
founder of the Minority Aviation Education Association,
Inc., a preeminent science and math outreach company that
provides interactive science and math programs to students,
teachers, and parents around the country. During the camp,
Baynes will educate students about science in a fun,
hands-on and interactive way. Two examples of planned
activities include riding a hover-craft and experimenting
with robotics. Additional activities will concentrate on
various science fields such as engineering, biology,
physics, rocketry, and chemistry.
The grant will be used to
provide partial or full scholarships for low-income students
to attend the camp. Additionally, funds will be earmarked
for high school students who will work at the camp as Baynes’
assistants.
