Located in
Wheeling, Crittenton Services, Inc. mission is to “embrace
children and families in need with nurturing services to
help them achieve self-sufficiency.” The agency was
established in 1895 to provide shelter for “wayward” women
in crisis. Over the past century, Crittenton Services has
evolved from a group home and facilitator of adoption
services into a fully accredited therapeutic residential
facility serving abused, neglected, and behaviorally
challenged girls, ages 12-18
One of Crittenton Services’
core programs is a level II behavioral health residential
facility, serving 42 girls who are in need of protection,
alternative living arrangements, and/or other specialized
services as referred either through the Juvenile Justice
System or the Child Welfare System. Crittenton Services
Residential Program accepts clients from all 55 counties in
West Virginia, as well as clients from Ohio, Pennsylvania,
and New York. Crittenton Services has the only licensed
residential maternity home in West Virginia and is one of
the few childcare agencies in the state that is fully
accredited by The Council on Accreditation.
During an
average stay of six to nine months, residents are active in
an education program, participate in individual and group
therapy, life and social skills training, and have all
medical needs met. One unique program offered by Crittenton
Services is the Art and Music Therapy Program. This program
uses a variety of artistic modalities for assessment and
treatment while also offering clients an opportunity to
explore intense thoughts and feelings and increase written
and verbal skills. Finally, the Art and Music Therapy
Program helps instill confidence and promote life-enhancing
change through the use of art and music.
The Mollohan
Family Foundation recently awarded Crittenton Services, Inc.
with a grant for $4,643 to purchase items for the Art and
Music Therapy Program. Among these items are a World Music
Drumming Package, an Ibanez IJV50 Jam Pack Quick Start, a
Philips Shelf System, a Yamaha 76 Key Portable Grant Piano,
a Dell Color Laser Printer 3100cn, a used kick wheel, clay,
clay tools, Tjanting tools for batiking, and 140 lbs. cold
press watercolor paper. It is the hope of the Mollohan
Foundation that the young women served by the Art and
Therapy Program will find healing, confidence, and life
enhancement through their activities.
